The Baptist Prayer House

The Baptist Prayer House and the Baptist Community of Sâncraiu

The Baptist mission in the Călata region began in 1888, and it has made an impact  soon in Sâncraiu. Within the first ten years of missionary activity, the first results appeared, leading to the establishment of the Baptist community in Sâncraiu.

At first, religious services were held in private homes, mainly in the house of András Gábora, as the community did not yet have a prayer house. The prayer house was built in 1911 (the photograph was taken in 1922).

The Baptist community takes its name from the practice of believer’s baptism in adulthood. Baptism is considered a personal decision that comes from an individual relationship with God. For this reason, baptism is not administered to very young children, but to those who consciously choose to follow God.

The term “baptism” comes from the Greek word baptidzo, meaning “to immerse,” which is also the origin of the word “Baptist.” Baptism by immersion has been practiced since the time of the Reformation and was traditionally carried out outdoors, preferably in running water.

The word “baptism” comes from the Greek term baptidzo, meaning “to immerse,” from which the name “Baptist” is also derived.

Baptism by immersion has been practiced since the time of the Reformation (1560’s) and was traditionally carried out outdoors, preferably in flowing water. During the communist period, outdoor baptisms were forbidden, so our communities began building special baptisteries inside their prayer houses. In many places, the memory of outdoor baptisms has been preserved through painted landscapes behind the baptistery, often depicting a stream flowing symbolically toward the baptismal pool.

Our faith is rooted in the belief that God redeemed us, that the blood of Jesus Christ cleansed us from sin, and that we are no longer under the power of evil.

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36)

Today, our meetings take place in the renovated prayer house every Sunday at 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM. We also gather on Wednesdays at 7:00 PM and on Friday evenings at 7:00 PM for youth meetings.

May God’s blessing be upon all the people of the village.
