The Orthodox Church of Domoșu

The Orthodox Church of Domoșu

The Orthodox parish is formed by the Christian communities of two villages, Domoșu and Horlacea. It is a small Orthodox community, consisting of 13 families (29 people) in Domoșu and 12 families (26 people) in Horlacea, representing around 10% of the population of these villages.

The exact age of the Orthodox Christian community in Domoșu and Horlacea is not known. However, records mention that in 1951 there was a small wooden church located in the parish cemetery, about which little information has survived. This church was later replaced by the current church situated in the center of the village. Its construction began in 1951 and was completed in 1958, with the support of local believers and other donors.

The church was built of wood on a stone foundation. Part of the timber was brought from the old church in Buteni. The exterior walls were plastered, the interior was painted, and several religious scenes were added to the church vault. The church was consecrated on June 29, 1958, during the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, the patron saints of the church.

Over the years, the church required several repair works. The most important renovation was the interior wall painting in tempera technique, created between 2010 and 2011 by the church painter Paul Bătăiosu from Huedin. The paintings were consecrated on November 6, 2011, by Bishop Vasile Someșeanul of the Archdiocese of Vad, Feleac and Cluj.

Today, the Orthodox community of Domoșu and Horlacea has a small but welcoming and well-maintained church, reflecting the spirit of the local community.
